Starting A New Ways Program
1. Watch the New Ways for Families “Intro” DVD (1 hour) and decide if you want to do this method.
2. Contact other professionals, including local counselors and, if possible, local lawyers and judges.
3. Read the Professional Guidebook, Parent Workbook and articles about how New Ways is different.
4. As a group, develop a timeline for starting a New Ways program, ideally getting the support of judges and active family lawyers.
5. Schedule a 2-day training with High Conflict Institute. DAY ONE may be satisfied in person or by watching the “Basic” 6-hour training DVD available from our website. DAY TWO must be done in-person and involves active participation in practice exercises for each of the four steps of the New Ways method. The feedback from the trainer and the group discussion is essential to understanding and implementing the many paradigm shifts of New Ways for Families.
6. Adapt the New Ways forms and procedures to fit your local agency and family court jurisdiction, with High Conflict Institute approval.
7. Sign the New Ways for Families licensing agreement with High Conflict Institute and begin taking cases. If your group has joined the New Ways for Families study, then have clients fill out the study surveys (for the Alliant University graduate psychology program study in San Diego) so that the method can be accurately evaluated.
