New Ways For Families™ - Training Seminar Details

Training for: Mental Health Professionals, Judges, Lawyers, Parenting Coordinators, Mediators and Collaborative Professionals 

High Conflict Institute provides Advanced and Basic Training seminars.

This training is designed for all mental health practitioners providing counseling to children and families in the New Ways program. Other professionals, such as Judicial Officers, family court professionals, lawyers, parenting coordinators, high-conflict case managers, mediators and collaborative professionals should complete the Basic Training to understand the reasoning and procedures of each step and to effectively reinforce the skills taught in the counseling sessions.

Seminar Details

Basic Training, 1-day

The overview of New Ways for Families™ is provided, including:

  • the purpose of the method
  • how it can be used in various settings, including family court, mediation, and collaborative law
  • the research basis (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Child-Inclusive Mediation and Dialectical Behavior Therapy)
  • the need for immunizing parents and children against becoming high-conflict families in the family court system
  • handling domestic violence, substance abuse, child abuse, child alienation, and other high-conflict issues

Advanced Training, 2-day

In addition to the information provided in the Basic Training:

  • an overview of five personality disorders, traits of which most often drive high-conflict disputes
  • an analysis of the general litigation and negotiating behavior of these personality types
  • skills to manage these clients in mediation, litigation and collaborative law
  • ethical problems common in high-conflict cases

Training Objectives

  • Participants will become familiar with existing program outcome research for high-conflict families.
  • Participants will become familiar with the DSM-IV-TR criteria of serveral personality disorders.
  • Participants will identify how the theory, principles and functions of New Ways for Families™ apply to working with parents and children.
  • Participants will learn about the five basic purposes of New Ways.
  • Participants will learn how to effectively spend time helping clients learn the most important skills in a short period of time.
  • Participants will learn how to help clients work toward the client’s goals by using the Workbooks to get meaningful conversations started that focus on learning new basic skills for close relationships.
  • Participants will learn how to use his or her own unique counseling style, skills and methods while working through the Workbooks, to help the client develop self-help skills and make the process predictable for both parents and their children.
  • Participants will learn about the 3-step structured New Ways for Families method

     

Handling Domestic Violence and Related Issues in New Ways For Families™
New Ways for Families™ is designed to reduce high-conflict litigation, which usually includes concerns about five special issues: Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse, Child Abuse, Parental Alienation, and False Allegations. The Basic and Advanced Training seminar provides current information about these five issues and how to handle them using the New Ways model. Also addressed will be preparing clients for settlement of their parenting plan, preparing them for appropriate treatment programs (alcohol or drug treatment, batterer’s treatment, etc.), and preparing them for low-conflict follow-up procedures, such as a Parenting Coordinator and Parenting Classes.

Bill Eddy, LCSW, Esq.,
is President and Co-Founder of High Conflict Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona. Bill is a Certified Family Law Specialist in California with fifteen years’ experience representing clients in family court, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with twelve years’ experience providing therapy to children, adults, couples, and families in psychiatric hospitals and out patient clinics. In addition, he is Senior Family Mediator at the National Conflict Resolution Center in San Diego, California. He has taught Negotiation and Mediation at the University Of San Diego School Of Law. He provides seminars on mental health issues for judges, attorneys, and mediators, and seminars on law and ethics for mental health professionals.
