Training options vary depending on the model to be used. Please see options below.
A community-wide, interdisciplinary 2-day training is ideal in order to bring together lawyers, mediators, counselors and any other professionals who may be working with families in divorce or separation. This is the most comprehensive training.
The 2-day training is required for professionals who want to use the Court-Based Counseling or Collaborative Divorce Model. The 2-day training also satisfies the training requirement for any of the other models, as it is our most comprehensive training.
New Ways for Families involves several important paradigm shifts from traditional family law practice. It is highly interdisciplinary, so that to be effective all professionals need to reinforce the skills that the parents are learning. It also focuses on “skills before decisions," so that professionals hold back from making decisions for the clients (except for necessary temporary decisions, such as restraining orders and temporary parenting plans). Implementing these shifts requires sufficient knowledge and practice, otherwise the method is unable to really help high-conflict families who may have been stuck for years in the adversarial process.
Therefore, two days of training for New Ways for Families is required for licensed counselors, psychologists, lawyers, and other professionals who want to use the New Ways curriculum with clients and represent themselves as a trained “New Ways provider.”
There are two options for a 2-Day training:
(A) "Live" training:
We can help you organize a 2-day training in your area, in which Bill Eddy or another HCI trainer will travel to your city to do the training "live" for your group. This allows for several professionals in the community to become trained at the same time, working together to provide the program to parents. Often there is a local organization or association that sponsors and helps coordinate the training, often also providing continuing education credits. HCI may also be able to offer continuing education for this training, depending on your state.
(B) Video & Zoom training:
This is an alternative to the “live” training, usually for smaller groups of 3-10 professionals. Day 1 material is presented via the 1-hour Intro for Professionals video (Free on YouTube) and the 6-hour Basic Training Video. Day 2 material is presented "live" via Zoom. Handouts are provided.
*Note: To offer New Ways counseling, the mental health professional must be licensed in their jurisdiction to offer counseling services (ie LCSW, MFT, PhD, LPC etc.). If you are a mental health professional who is not licensed to provide counseling services, you may still use New Ways in our coaching or class model.
Decision Skills Class Video Training:
For the Decision Skills Class model, a 90 min online training is provided. An Instructor's Manual and Workbook are required for the training. Any parent educator or professional qualified to teach a parenting class in their jurisdiction can offer the Decision Skills Class model. The professional is not required to be a licensed counselor. Any 2-Day New Ways training also satisfies the training requirement for this model.
Pre-Mediation Coaching video Training:
For the Pre-Mediation Coaching model, a 90 min online training is provided. An Instructor's Manual and Workbook are required for the training. Any professional can work with parents using this coaching model, including a counselor, lawyer, mediator, or mediation/law office staff person. The professional is not required to be a licensed counselor or mediator. Any 2-day New Ways training also satisfies the training requirement for this model.
